Turkish Cypriot Home Care (TCH) is continuing to achieve its aims of providing good quality care to improve the lives of those vulnerable members of Turkish and Greek speaking communities. TC Homecare, with the knowledge and experience of over 10 year’s service, is now bigger and better and has stronger links both between the clients and the local authorities. We have been maintaining our good reputation between the service users, their families and eight local authorities that we work with. Turkish Cypriot Homecare is registered with Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) who regulates TCH and ensures that all standards and regulations are abided in accordance with the legislation. This ensures TCH commitments for quality of service are provided to the most vulnerable people in an appropriate manner. We always keep in line with the Department of Health guidance and legislation, and apply this to our daily care giving. Therefore, with our partners we are now working within the guidance of the recent White Paper, (Choice, Independence and Wellbeing). This means that we are providing more person-centred and enabling care that aims to promote service users rights and choice and puts them at the centre of decision making. In terms of internal structure and staffing, TCH has sponsored a member of staff to gain a qualification in Social work. We are pleased to announce that Nurhan Mustafa, who has been the Home Care Coordinator since 1998, has now completed his degree course and is a fully qualified Social worker. TCCA management committee is recommending a new structure to improve our service delivery and to keep in line with the local authority changes. We are hoping to start this project by the end of this year. Training is a major part of our operations and service improvement. We are in line with the CSCI target of 50% NVQ qualified staff by 2008. We are in partnership with Skills For Care training groups for different local authorities where we nominate members of staff to attend training to gain various levels of NVQ. Some of our Carers can not speak English and this remains to be a challenge in terms of training. We are liaising with colleges to provide translated materials and Turkish speaking NVQ assessors in order to overcome this. Demand for our services remains high as TCH is currently the only agency that provides Carers who speak solely Turkish, Greek and English. However, this doesn’t lead us to any complacency. We work hard to keep up to date with all changes and requirements. We are currently providing service’s to 130 clients across the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Enfield, Haringey, Hackney, Islington, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forrest. Our main client groups are Turkish and Greek speaking adults and elderly people who are currently staying with their family in their own home. TCH operates a 24-hour emergency service 365 days a year. Service users, their families, friends and also the carers can call our emergency number directly to speak to a trained employee in the case of an emergency, otherwise they can contact the office from 9-5 Monday to Friday.

The Carer’s Support Project is funded by London Borough of Hackney Social Services, to provide outreach support, respite and advice to Turkish Speaking informal carers to enable them to have a break from their caring roles. The project also allows us to support carers with general information and advice on their housing issues and welfare benefits. When the Carer’s Recognition Act came into force, DoH provided local authorities with a grant to be distributed to worthwhile projects to support those hidden carers who have been providing unpaid support to their loved ones. TCCA has been successful in obtaining this grant since 1998. We employ a part time Carers Support Worker who is an experienced carer. Goksel has built up good networks both within the community and local authorities and has earned an excellent reputation for his hard and caring work.
